Analysis of SkeletalMusclePerformanceUsing
PiezoelectricFilmssensors
2014
---
1
Analysis of skeletal muscles
performance is vital for diagnosis,
rehabilitation program and sport training.
Noninvasive analysis ofmuscle
performance is currently done by
electromyography (EMG).
The EMG signal is frequently very low
and affectedby artifacts and noises
which reduce the signal tonoise ratio
and thus the ability toprocess the data.
Muscle movement canbedetected
using a flexible piezoelectric thin film
sensor which sense themuscle
morphological change during contraction
and relaxation.
Previous studies utilized the
piezoelectric sensors only formotion
detection.
The ability toassess themuscle
performanceat different dynamic
maneuvers using piezoelectric signals
has never been studied before.

Background
3.1. Experimental Setup
Disposable surfaceEMG electrodes and
DTpiezoelectric thin film sensors were
attached over themeasured skeletal
muscle.
The signals were simultaneously
recordedduring different dynamic
maneuvers at a sampling rateof 1KHz
for 50–180 s.
The subjects relaxed for at least 5min
between successive tests.
The signals were analyzed offline using
MATLAB software.
3.Methods
To develop anexperimental system and
algorithm for evaluation of skeletal muscle
performanceduring dynamic motion
utilizing piezoelectric thin film sensors.
